Green Flag

The Green Schools Water Committee was formed in October, with members selected by their classmates. The committee includes Ruby and Lottie from 1st class, Alecia and Olivia from 2nd class, Kylie and Kate from 3rd class, Phiney and Eirinn from 4th cla

The committee conducted a water assessment of the school and identified all water-using appliances.

A few of the committee girls reading the water metre outside the school. We calculated how much water was used in one school day.

Our "Leaky Detectives," Éirinn and Phoney, used food dye to investigate potential leaks in the school toilets.

Third-class students working on "Water is Life" poster competition.

Senior Infants conducted a "Will It Float?" science experiment, exploring buoyancy by testing different objects to see whether they float or sink in water.

n the "Think Before You Flush" experiment, we placed flushable wipes and toilet paper in separate jars, shook them, and observed the results. The toilet paper dissolved easily, while the flushable wipes remained thick and intact.

Third class carried out a water pollution celery experiment, using food dye to demonstrate how water travels through plants. This helped them visualise how polluted water can enter our food system.

The committee created water saving tips that will be displayed around the school.

Some of the tips: Run the washing machine only when it's full. Notify an adult if you spot a leak. Use a timer to keep your showers short. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.

St. Patricks GNS is working to promote water conservation in a fun and meaningful way. The Green Schools Committee monitors water usage in the school and shares tips on how to save water. Everyone gets involved in fun scientific water experiments to learn more about conservation.
Students are also taking part in the Think Before You Flush campaign to spread awareness about using water wisely.
There is also a Water Is Life poster competition running where students get creative to show why water is so important.
